If you have sneaking suspicion that you might be in an abusive relationship, you MUST read this..
In Leaving, Kanchan shows that with belief in self and universe one can triumph over the most dire of circumstances. I salute Kanchan on two accounts - first for living the life she did, transforming into a lioness and eventually emerging as a peaceful and purpose driven person; and second, for reliving her nightmare to bring us this poignant account of unimaginable atrocities. In doing so, Kanchan gives strength to millions of us that may be in different stages of abusive relationships. What sets this story apart from similar in this genre is its ability to have the reader gripped from start to finish - I couldn't keep the book down. I will repeat myself, if you have even a sneaking suspicion that you are in an abusive relationship (physical, emotion, financial or otherwise) you need to read her account. In addition to being a memoir, this book is also a self-help book that gives you the tools to identify and then liberate yourself from a difficult situation.
Great read..
Poignant narrative of a modern, yet traditional, educated Indian woman who broke free from an abusive marriage, whilst building a successful corporate career in 2 continents (Asia, N. America). She brought her children with her on this journey to freedom, demonstrating that focus, ambition and faith can overcome obstacles, disappointments and setbacks. Great read that I finished on a long plane ride. Highly recommended.
Supreme Courage before and after leaving..
This book is more than just leaving. It's about the courage to survive and strive to thrive through many healing techniques. There are many books on this subject, but nothing touches a victim more than a personal story and the roadmap to the liberation God calls us to. Tears rolled down my cheeks initially because of the fear and hopelessness I could feel in those chapters, and tears rolled down my cheeks as I celebrated the small wins I could read through the book's later chapter's.
What a compelling story of resilience! I loved reading about this mama tigress.
Wow - Excellent!
Not a normal read for me, but what a really uplifting story. So painful at many times and a real rollercoaster; the tough parts are just wrenching but the narrative kept me turning page after page. Ms Bhaskar’s writing made the situations so vivid, yet I still wanted more information; almost as if each chapter could support a book in itself.
I feel terrible for anyone that has had to endure something similar to Ms Bhaskar’s. But she shows that it’s possible to not only survive and persevere in such situations, but find ways to thrive, and not just for herself, but her children too! What a strong will to overcome so many obstacles and challenges.
A powerful account that should be encouraging and uplifting to anyone in similar circumstances. Bravo Ms. Bhaskar!
Spousal abuse: hard to talk about but important to read
While such miseries that are rarely shared in conversation, they adapt beautifully to a well told memoir. In memoirs authors come out from behind forced smiles, and spell the whole thing out, in detail.
On the receiving end, readers say “Please tell me about the most outrageous assaults on your personhood. All I ask in return is that your story leads through the darkness toward hope – the hope of human kindness, of compassion, of banding together, of insight and wisdom.
Kanchan Bhaskar’s memoir Leaving does not disappoint. Her miserable difficulties extend across an impossibly long period, and ever so slowly and steadily she climbs to empowered effort and decisions. In the end, she does find her strength and the joy of being alive.
In addition to this central theme of finding herself through the night-of-the-soul valley of spousal abuse, the memoir offers fascinating subthemes, in the marriage and family relationships across two continents. For anyone curious about the cultural norms of India, this book will provide many insights.
Another theme is found in the conclusion, to move toward “giving back,” helping others who have struggled through similar situations.
Memoir genre purists might disagree with the sheer length of the character arc, from teenager dreams to retiree insights – for me, that is not a problem. The length of the character arc fit perfectly with the needs of the story.
A true page turner. Leaving is a a must read!
I am floored! Read the book in less than 48 hours - a true page turner. Leaving is a heartwarming story of a survivor, a story Kanchan has gifted to the world. Thanks for putting your past into words - there are way too many people living similar lives who need a voice; through this book, Kanchan has done exactly that. Bravo!
The book does a phenomenal job of storytelling, which is what makes it a page turner; Kanchan has a unique way of transporting the reader to a different world - a world a lot of us may not be aware exists out there. I really appreciated the details she captured in the book that brings the story to life.
Glad to have read the book. Highly recommended!
A moving read on an important topic..
Kanchan Bhaskar has written about a difficult subject matter in a vivid, moving manner. As someone who has close knowledge of India, I still did not appreciate what happens all too frequently behind closed doors. I enjoyed following her path from a young bride of twenty-three, eager to experience her new life, to the devastating shock of her marital relationship, through to her personal growth and spiritual expanse.
This memoir is an opening into a specific society, its culture, and laws, as well as a universal story about how to liberate oneself from life trauma. The turning points and moments of awareness-raising can be applied to other places and situations.
I am so glad I read this illuminating account about lifting oneself out of unButtonimaginable circumstances.
